During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an bold beginning to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
