A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
